If you are facing an unplanned pregnancy and know you don’t wish to parent, there are two other options available: have an abortion or make an adoption plan. These choices have very different outcomes, so getting the facts about each is critical.
At First Choice Georgia Pregnancy Clinic, we provide a free and confidential options consultation in a non-judgmental space. We can review your situation and discuss all of your options. Schedule your free appointment.
What Do You Think About Abortion?
Any type of abortion ends a pregnancy. It is a serious medical decision. Learning about the various procedures, side effects to expect, and the potential physical and emotional risks is vital.
There are two types of abortion: medical (also referred to as the abortion pill method) and surgical. Usually, how far along you are in your pregnancy determines the type of abortion you qualify for.
A medical abortion uses drugs to end and expel a pregnancy. The FDA approves the use of these drugs through 10 weeks of pregnancy only. The further along you are, the less effective the drugs are.
A surgical procedure takes place in a clinic or hospital. This type of abortion uses suction, and surgical tools like a curette for scraping or forceps to remove larger parts. You often need to have your cervix (which leads to the uterus) dilated (opened) and have local or general anesthesia.
Although we do not provide or refer for abortion, we invite you to talk to a member of our medical staff or one of our specially-trained patient advocates about the side effects you should expect and the potential physical and emotional risks.
Before Any Abortion
You’ll want to confirm your pregnancy with free and confidential pregnancy testing. If your test is positive, First Choice Georgia offers free ultrasounds.
An ultrasound confirms if your pregnancy is developing or if you have had a miscarriage. Ultrasound also determines how far along you are in your pregnancy to help you determine your options.
Have You Considered Making an Adoption Plan?
Making an adoption plan requires you to carry your pregnancy to full term, but you are not responsible for day-to-day parenting duties. Choosing adoption for your child is not easy.
Today, the expectant mother or birth mother makes all of the decisions. She can choose the adoptive parents and essentially guide the future of her child. After finalization, she can also decide how much contact she wishes to have with the adoptive family.
Here are some of the benefits of choosing to place your child for adoption:
- It costs you nothing.
- You choose the adoptive parents.
- You choose between an open, semi-open, or closed adoption depending on how much contact you wish to have with your child and their adoptive family.
- All your medical and legal expenses are paid, and other pregnancy-related costs may be covered.
- Counseling and support groups are available to help you.
- You can change your mind any time until you sign legal papers.
Before Choosing Adoption
First Choice Georgia is not a licensed child-placing agency, but we can refer you to reputable adoption coordinators in our area. Adoption, like abortion, involves a certain measure of loss. You want to be very sure this is the best option for you and your child.
