If you’ve tested positive for pregnancy, an ultrasound is a great next step. It’s a simple, safe procedure that uses sound waves to create a digital image of your pregnancy.

There’s really nothing you need to do to prepare, except you may be encouraged to drink a bottle of water beforehand so you come with a full bladder (this can help provide better image results).

You don’t have to figure it out on your own. You can schedule a no-cost, confidential appointment to get answers and learn what your next steps could look like.

How to Prepare for Your Appointment

Preparing for an ultrasound is usually simple, but a few small steps can help your appointment go more smoothly.

Wearing loose, comfortable clothing can make it easier to adjust or remove part of your outfit if needed. You might also want to call ahead before your appointment. They may tell you you need to arrive with a full bladder.

During the Ultrasound

During an abdominal ultrasound, the sonographer (the person performing the ultrasound) will apply a small amount of gel to your abdomen and move the transducer across your skin to capture images.

For a transvaginal ultrasound, you’ll be positioned similarly to a routine pap test, and a small, lubricated transducer is gently inserted to capture clear images early in pregnancy.

Transvaginal ultrasounds are usually performed if it’s very early in the pregnancy.
